Charles Eugène Delaunay

paragraph Charles Eugène Delaunay (1816–1872) was a French astronomer and mathematician. Educated at the École polytechnique, he subsequently taught descriptive geometry, analytical mechanics, mechanical drawing and elementary physics there and at the École des mines. He became professor of physical mechanics at the Sorbonne, then at the École polytechnique. A member of the Bureau des longitudes from 1855, he became director of the Paris Observatory in 1870, a post he held until his accidental death in 1872. His most important work concerned celestial mechanics, particularly the theory of the Moon's motion, for which he developed an original analytical method based on successive canonical transformations.
