Jean-Toussaint Desanti

paragraph Jean-Toussaint Desanti (1914–2002) was a French philosopher whose work brought together phenomenology, the philosophy of mathematics and political engagement. A former student of the École Normale Supérieure (1936), he studied phenomenology under Maurice Merleau-Ponty and the philosophy of mathematics under Jean Cavaillès. He taught at the École Normale Supérieure and the Sorbonne. A member of the Resistance during the Second World War and close to Sartre and Malraux, he joined the Communist Party from 1943 to 1956. His most important philosophical works concern the epistemological status of mathematical objects: in Les Idéalités mathématiques (1968), he analyses the conditions of possibility for the development of the theory of functions of real variables, questioning the relationship between the history, practice and objectivity of mathematics. In La philosophie silencieuse (1975), he offers a rigorous critique of philosophies of science.
