More than two thousand of you joined us on 4 December 2022 at the Musée des arts et métiers in Paris to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Tangente magazine (see the report in issue 209, published in early January). Even more of you would probably have come had a last-minute strike not prevented many readers from making the journey. The day was such a success that the Musée des arts et métiers proposed establishing it as an annual event. A decision will be made shortly and is expected to be positive, especially since three mathematical foundations—the Fondation Blaise-Pascal, the Fondation Jacques-Hadamard and the Fondation sciences mathématiques de Paris—provided funding for the day, for which we thank them. But did you know that the event was organized by the association Club Tangente?
A partly renewed team ---------------------------------
Club Tangente is an organization founded in 2013 to bring together everyone who cares about developing mathematical culture. How? By organizing cultural events and competitions that reward literary, artistic, recreational and technical creations inspired by mathematics.
The executive committee, which had remained unchanged since the organization was founded in 2013, has just been renewed. Its new president is Emmanuel Cepa, an academic from Orléans, who succeeds another Orléans resident well known to readers of Tangente, Bertrand Hauchecorne. Élisabeth Busser replaces Alain Zalmanski as secretary. Gilles Cohen remains treasurer.

Whether or not they sit on the board, several members play a very active role. They include Denise Demaret-Pranville, who manages relations with artists; Éric Trouillot, who handles communications, particularly the Twitter page where you can follow the club's activities; Bertrand Hauchecorne, who oversees the Prix Tangente; Fabien Aoustin, who oversees the Prix Tangente des lycéens; Michel Criton, who oversees the Prix Affaire de Logique; and Martine Brilleaud, who oversees the Litteramath website.
But there is still plenty to be done at Club Tangente. So do not hesitate to join, offer to help with existing initiatives or even suggest new ones. Practical details can be found in the box opposite.
Strong ties between mathematics and literature ------------------------------------------
Since its founding, Club Tangente has organized the Tangente Awards, which recognize literary, recreational and technical creations inspired by mathematics by presenting their creators with works of art. One distinctive feature of many of these prizes is that they highlight the connections between mathematics and literature—two fields that some people still mistakenly believe to be incompatible. You are not among them, of course, since you read Tangente.
The best-known of the Tangente Awards is a literary prize that has become a benchmark: the Prix Tangente du livre. It recognizes a recently published book that is accessible to everyone, in which mathematics plays an important role and that has been reviewed in an issue or special edition of Tangente. In practice, the new team has decided on a small change. Once the group overseeing the prize has drawn up a preliminary selection from these titles, only subscribers to Tangente and members of Club Tangente will be invited to vote for the five shortlisted books, or "nominees". These will then be submitted to an independent jury that includes the previous year's winner. The list of selected books and the opening of the vote will be announced in late June in issue 212 and on the Club Tangente website. So, if you have not already done so, do not hesitate to subscribe to Tangente or join the Club (see box).
The Prix Tangente des lycéens (PTL) is awarded each year by several hundred students, who are invited to read the ten shortlisted books and choose their favorite. Sixty-three schools entered the prize for its 2022–2023 season. If you are a teacher, you can register your school now—and no later than 30 November—for the 2023–2024 PTL (rules are available on the awards website: **tropheestangente.com/Club.php**).
A third award bringing mathematics and literature together, the Prix du meilleur article (PMA), challenges entrants to write an article "in the style of Tangente", explaining mathematics in prose accessible to the widest possible audience. Several recent contributors to Tangente first came to attention through the PMA. Do not hesitate to register now at **tropheestangente.com/inscription.php** (and no later than 30 September; see the news section on the inside front cover).

Finally, among the initiatives linking mathematics and literature is the Litteramath project, developed in partnership with the APMEP. Originally, it consisted of recommending reading lists for school libraries. Since 2021, Littéramath has had a website bringing together a wealth of information about mathematical literature: a directory of books, thematic articles, classroom activities, resource presentations, books for young readers and more. The project now extends beyond schools and aims to become a reference resource for everyone on the theme of "mathematics through storytelling".
Arts and puzzles: creativity takes center stage -------------------------------------
Literary creation inspired by mathematics is not the only kind supported by Club Tangente. Consider artistic creation: all the trophies presented to winners are signed works of mathematical art. Those of you who attended the event on 4 December had the opportunity to meet the artists and admire their work. Here is a lesser-known fact: in its early years, Club Tangente organized "Osc’Art Tangente", a mathematical art competition. Although the prize has not been held again, a large proportion of the artists who create the works presented to Tangente Award winners were themselves Osc’Art winners.
Mathematical creativity can also take other forms. Over the past two years, it has given rise to a new award, the Prix Affaire de Logique, named after the weekly column in the daily newspaper Le Monde by Élisabeth Busser, Gilles Cohen and Jean-Louis Legrand. The aim is to create original mathematical puzzles that require no advanced knowledge and are presented in a way that makes people eager to solve them. Since its launch, this new challenge has inspired a great many people. Everyone is invited to enter the 2023 edition (see box). As with every Tangente Award you are invited to enter, do not wait until the last minute: get an early start so that, when the time comes, you can submit an entry that attracts the jury members' attention—for all the right reasons.
