The Multimagie website is offering, to advance twelve still-unsolved problems about these mathematical objects, twelve prizes totaling €8,000, together with twelve bottles of champagne. One of these puzzles has just been solved by Sébastien Miquel: this PhD student built the smallest known magic square that is both additive and multiplicative. The previous record was an 8 × 8 square. This time it is a 7 × 7 square, with magic sum 465 and magic product 150,885,504,000, which nonetheless took the young mathematician and his computer six hundred hours of computation!
