The deep connections between mathematics and music in the process of composition grew richer during the twentieth century.

The Laplacian operator is used to describe most diffusion phenomena in physics. It is central to analysis, geometry and probability theory, among other fields. Its origins lie in an equation discovered by Laplace that governs the gravitational interaction between bodies separated by empty space.

While gender inequalities in mathematics are now widely recognized, other forms of exclusion remain less studied: people from the working classes are also notably absent. This finding challenges the idea that mathematics is socially neutral and open to everyone, as it is often assumed to be.
