**Archaeology uses **many quantitative methods based on mathematics: photogrammetry, searching for numerical patterns—or, conversely, showing that they are illusory. In another area, however, mathematics is used to construct logical models that test lines of reasoning. This has been particularly true in the archaeology and paleontology of human settlement, where the "wave of advance" model has gained considerable prominence.
