About this book
Henri Poincaré left a strong scientific imprint on his era that made his reputation as a "universal scholar". His vision goes beyond the compartmentalization between mathematics and physics. It was by studying curves defined by differential equations that he examined with an innovative eye the old problem of the stability of the solar system and gave birth to dynamical systems. More generally, he revisits in his own way each of the mathematical domains he chooses to investigate.
In physics, he played a decisive role in the study of the speed of light, Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, or the demonstration of the motion of the Earth. With Lorentz, he developed the formalism of special relativity, which Einstein would develop further.
He was also involved in his era, contributing to the dissemination of science to a wide audience, but also fighting on all fronts to champion the lights of knowledge. Thus, in the Dreyfus affair, his work was decisive in dismantling the prosecution's arguments.
