Sorting words

A priori, everyone knows how to use a dictionary and therefore how to sort words. But is the sorting method easy to explain?
The basic idea is to compare the words character by character. If the first characters are identical, we move on to the next ones. As soon as two characters differ, the order of the words is determined.
If every letter up to the end of one of the words is identical, the shorter word comes first. We will write "<" between two words to indicate that the first comes before the second in the dictionary. Thus, allo < amen < amendement < banc.
It seems simple enough.
