An event within the event, on Sunday, December 3 at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Musée des arts et métiers: the awards ceremony for the "Bull's-eye" competition. What was it all about? Since March, 1,000 people had been taking part each week on the Affaire de logique website, tackling problems devised by the authors of the famous weekly mathematics column in Le Monde.
Despite the difficulty of the weekly challenges, seven contestants achieved the maximum score of 1,000 points (see the leaderboard in the box), while 323 scored the 400 points needed to win a prize.
A tiebreaker question was therefore needed. Each participant was asked to name their ten favorite problems, then bet on the resulting ranking (see affairedelogique.com). Tangente subscribers can also use the site to access more than 150 problems from the column, together with their solutions, free of charge.
