Le Grand Roman des maths, de la Préhistoire à nos jours, by Mickaël Launay (Flammarion, 2016), delighted the editors of Tangente, who awarded it their 2017 literary prize for mathematical culture (see Tangente 179). The book also captivated nearly 100,000 readers eager for an accessible and insightful account of the history of the queen of the sciences. They include the students who have just awarded it the Tangente High School Students' Prize. The author's blog, "Micmaths, bric-à-brac mathématique et ludique" (www.micmaths.com), likewise has a host of loyal followers, and this is no coincidence.
The D'Alembert Prize jury overwhelmingly chose this cheerful young ambassador for mathematics in recognition of the breadth of his efforts to share and popularize the subject. The French Mathematical Society, which created the award in 1984, launched a complementary distinction this year: the Jacqueline-Ferrand Prize, recognizing innovative educational initiatives in mathematics. Its first recipients are Carole Cortay and Christophe Gilger for their M@ths en-vie project (see Tangente Éducation 45).
