To mark the publication of issue 200, Tangente organized a problem-writing competition. Nine of the forty-three puzzles submitted received prizes, but many others deserved one too. We asked the jury members to single out their personal favorites.

The prolific Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdős (1913–1996), along with many number theorists and combinatorialists who followed him, studied the "discrepancy problem." In 1932, Erdős formulated a deep conjecture. In 2015, Tao proved it.

To calculate France's population, Laplace proposes a sampling method based on births and introduces the normal distribution to estimate the error. It would take until the 21st century for Insee to draw inspiration from his method.

This article brings together several puzzles, some created especially as a tribute to Gilles Cohen and his tireless work creating puzzles.
