The CNRS recently produced a map for the general public that showcases the breadth of mathematical research and some of its practical applications. The document fits on a single landscape-format page and is set against a starry background, with outer space helping to erase boundaries that are sometimes artificial. The various galaxies (arithmetic, analysis, algebra, geometry…) contain several constellations of topics, problems and illustrations. Around ten questions invite readers to engage, sparking curiosity and discussion: are there more ways to shuffle a deck of fifty-two cards than there are atoms on Earth? Can a sphere be made from a sheet of paper? How are demonstrators counted? The result is packed with detail yet remains easy to read.
