Tangente's 35th anniversary | Tangente

The magazine of mathematical culture Tangente, the only one in the world sold at newsstands and by newspaper vendors, is about to celebrate its 35th anniversary. A little nod to readers: the next special issue, out at the end of November, will be devoted to the theme "Tangency".

But the event that will mark this milestone in the popularization of mathematics, organized by the Club Tangente association, which runs the now famous Trophées Tangente, will take place at the Musée des arts et métiers (60 rue Réaumur, Paris 3^rd) on Sunday, December 4, free and open to the public. Some may remember: the similar day marking Tangente's 30th anniversary, in 2017, drew three thousand visitors, some of whom had come from far away and who left thoroughly delighted!

An incredibly rich program --------------------------------------

So you are all invited to experience an extraordinary day. The hardest part will probably be choosing between the simultaneous activities. A preview of this day's packed program is revealed at the end of this article. It will be updated in real time in the box at the end of this article. Here is a small glimpse of the variety of activities, for young and old alike, offered to celebrate the anniversary of your favorite magazine.

Two shows are scheduled, starting with the tale for the young (and the not-so-young), "La faiseuse de neige," written and narrated by Marie Lhuissier (see box), which will be performed twice, one of which will be followed by a workshop. At the end of the afternoon, the Terraquée company, which specializes in "theater of knowledge," will treat its audience to the play "Les indécis," a statistical cabaret (see box).

In addition to the Museum's temporary exhibitions ("Permis de conduire ?") or permanent ones (and the famous Foucault pendulum), "Mathématiques, informatique… avec elles !" will be presented, an exhibition unveiling the portraits of twenty young women working in mathematics and computer science professions that are not always known to the general public. It will be discussed, at some point during the day, by Anne Boyé, president of the Femmes et Maths association, who created the exhibition (see Tangente 207, 2022 and the website femmes-et-maths.fr/maths-info-avec-elles).

Creators of mathematical art will be on hand to display their works and explain how they were made: Denise Demaret-Pranville, Patrice Jeener (the "equation engraver"), the Scowcza collective (Pierre Schmitt and Dominique Owczarski), Sandrine Vivier-Souder, Sellig Zed (Gilles Fernandez)… Some of their works will in fact be given to the winners of the Trophées Tangente, which will be awarded at the end of the day in the conference room.

A mathematical rally, organized by Audrey Candeloro and Brigitte Bourgasser-Wenner (Mathématiques sans frontière association), will invite participants, equipped with a booklet of puzzles and a UV lamp, to go in search of additional clues written in invisible ink on posters scattered throughout the designated area, clues that will be revealed with their special lamp.

The public will also be invited to help build a giant collective structure (a tensegrity tower) created by the Science Ouverte association, under the direction of François Gaudel, and to gradually add to it throughout the day.

Over fifty speakers ------------------------------

Beyond these highly original events, the day will also be punctuated with more traditional activities, led by talented speakers.

Talks, of course — about ten are planned throughout the day, given by often well-known speakers from all over France (see the provisional program at the end of this article).

Numerous workshops (about a dozen at the time of writing) will be offered in parallel at various points during the day, each held several times (four times on average) to suit different audiences, in particular so that children and teenagers regularly find sessions aimed at them. In total, about fifty sessions of roughly half an hour will be devoted to thinking or playing throughout the day, in various locations around the museum.

Short talks given one after another throughout the day by authors of recent books on mathematical culture will let you learn more about their content and have them signed, if you wish. The Librairie Tangente (**infinimath.com/librairie),** located in the church, will be available to help you obtain these books.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., teachers will also be able to attend a meeting, in the presence of Claire Piolti-Lamorthe, the new president of the Association des professeurs de mathématiques de l'enseignement public (APMEP), presenting various teaching activities for the classroom: the Prix Tangente des lycéens, the Littéramath lists, mathematical competitions, board games (hex, go, bridge…). The day will end with the presentation of the Trophées Tangente, works of mathematical art created by the artists present that day and awarded to the winners of the Prix Tangente du livre, the Prix Tangente des lycéens, the Prix du meilleur article, and the Prix Affaire de logique.
