Readers of Tangente (and Tangente Éducation!) will already be familiar with the work of Marie Lhuissier, a storyteller with a gift for introducing young children—and the grown-ups accompanying them—to sophisticated mathematical objects, ideas and concepts. Each of her stories blends mathematics and poetry, offering a cultural perspective on the queen of the sciences and inspiring a sense of wonder. Children cannot help but appreciate the discipline's intrinsic beauty and be captivated by the images and ideas it conveys. The stories take the form of books and performances, and also provide material for writing workshops.
By doing so, Marie Lhuissier reaches a broader audience than mathematics outreach initiatives usually target. She is the 2022 winner of the Société mathématique de France's d'Alembert Prize. Awarded every two years since 1984, the prize recognizes initiatives of all kinds that help a broad audience learn more about and better understand mathematics.
