At the root of numbers
Extracting a root, for the famous scholar Cosinus, is a calculation session… at the dentist's. In maths, the methods for extracting square roots are multiple: exact or approximate, using sequences or functions, a calculator – it has become the modern reflex –, but also by hand, like at school for divisions, except that it's a bit more complicated. This will be an opportunity to discover a little-known technique for manually extracting cube roots! One can then easily generalize to complex roots, thanks to Euler, always him: their definition, the regular polygons they allow to draw, and what are called primitive roots with the concept of cyclotomic polynomial.

Square roots
"The square root is my favorite," declared Boris Vian in Racine carrée (Square Root) in 1957. From antiquity to modern high-performance computing, many methods have been devised to calculate square roots in practice.

Root extraction
Newton's method is a general method for finding the solution to an equation of the form f (x) = 0 by applying a simple algorithm.

Roots in the complex plane
The idea of a root extends readily to the field of complex numbers. In fact, it is even more at home there than among the real numbers, since this extension gives it a geometric interpretation. Welcome to the fascinating mathematical world of cyclotomy!
