The aim is not to teach a course, but to bring out the human and historical dimension, with “one episode, one idea” as the guiding principle. The project is supported by a scientific advisory board chaired by Martin Andler (and comprising Luca Agostino, Évelyne Barbin, Tatiana Beliaeva, Nathalie Chevalarias, Marc Moyon and François Plantade).
The series’ fifteen episodes feature Émilie du Châtelet, Maria Gaetana Agnesi, Newton and Leibniz’s infinitesimal calculus, al-Khwarizmi’s equations, Fibonacci, Descartes, Galileo and more. By focusing on the protagonists’ ideas and approaches rather than their personal lives, the series aims to reveal the men and women behind the mathematics and what drives them—their questions, challenges and problems. Each short animated film, lasting about six minutes, takes the form of a conversation between a mother and her teenage son, whom she is trying to draw into the mathematical adventure.
The series “La grande aventure des maths” will be available on the Lumni platform (**lumni.fr**) from October 2023.
