Exit is a digital artwork commissioned by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain and completed in late 2008. Its data was updated in 2015 for its presentation in Paris during COP21.
Visitors to the Culture et jeux mathématiques fair had the opportunity to see the film last May. It is also designed for an immersive screening on a 360° screen. It consists of a succession of animated maps, each offering a different way of representing global population movements, whether for economic reasons (currencies flowing from one country to another), ecological reasons (the names of cities that will soon be underwater scroll across the screen to aquatic sounds), or political reasons (the effects of conflicts on populations are depicted as streams of pixels converging on host countries). Dynamic displays reveal the effects of intensive deforestation in recent years on some regions. The artists’ choice of visual interpretation reflects their thinking about phenomena that are usually accessible only as numerical data.
