On the one hand, Georges Méliès is associated with the imaginative flair of a showman creating works of fiction on screen. On the other, the Lumière brothers are credited with the technical rigor behind a cinema rooted in reality. Art versus science, in a sense… But as so often happens, reality refuses to fit this simplistic picture. The Lumière brothers' films are far from lacking artistic merit. And contrary to what is sometimes imagined, Georges Méliès was also passionate about technology.
