Last Thursday, June 7, an unprecedented initiative ("Through Researchers' Eyes") brought journalists and scientists together: the French edition of the US news site Huffington Post (www.huffingtonpost.fr) joined forces with the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (www.cnrs.fr) to offer an original analysis of current events. For twenty-four hours, journalists from the online news outlet invited researchers to explore their articles in greater depth by putting substantive questions to them. For example, regarding the disruptions announced for the following day at SNCF, mathematician Bertrand Maury, a professor at Université Paris-Sud and co-founder of the start-up Signactif, was asked: "Can we predict how a cancelled train will affect passenger behavior?" Maury then discusses crowd-flow models and their recent development, which has made it possible to incorporate concepts from the social sciences, such as passenger comfort and stress levels, both of which influence behavior. But, he concludes, "Behavioral modeling is still in its infancy!" Tangente applauds this wonderful initiative and hopes it will be repeated.
