Éditions POLE is deeply saddened to announce the death of Gilles Cohen, founder and director of Tangente magazine, on Sunday, November 19.
Gilles Cohen was far more than the founder and director of Éditions POLE. A graduate of the École normale supérieure who held the agrégation in mathematics and formerly taught at Lycée Saint-Louis in Paris, he founded the Club Tangente, the Fédération française des jeux mathématiques (FFJM), the Comité international des jeux mathématiques (CIJM), and the annual “Culture et jeux mathématiques” fair, held on Place Saint-Sulpice in Paris. He wrote numerous mathematical-puzzle columns in major French newspapers, including the “Affaire de Logique” column in Le Monde.
The magazine's entire editorial team, everyone who works with Éditions POLE, and all those who knew him know how deeply this leading advocate for mathematics outreach wanted his work to live on. Together, let's carry on his work and continue the “mathematical adventure”!
His funeral will be held this Friday, November 24, at 1:45 p.m. at Pantin Cemetery (entrance on Avenue du Cimetière Parisien).
Following Gilles Cohen's death, many members of the mathematical community offered to donate to a cause championed by this tireless communicator.
