The correspondence with Goldbach -------------------------------

The number of letters making up Euler's scholarly correspondence is staggering: around 3,200 letters. He wrote exactly 1,118 of them, a third in French, a third in Latin and a third in German. Euler's correspondents, about three hundred of them, were European scholars, academy officials, publishers and booksellers. They discussed questions of mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, botany, philosophy, medicine, geography, cartography and administrative matters. Paris, London, Berlin and Saint Petersburg were the four cities with the leading academies of the 18^th century, each publishing its own journal read throughout Europe; they were the most important centers of this correspondence.
