Works inspired by mathematics

The town of Amilly (Loiret) has renovated former tanneries on the banks of the Loing, turning them into a contemporary art center. Besides exhibition rooms, a school will welcome trainees pursuing art studies. Upstairs, the first exhibition, running until March 12 and entitled "Histoire de formes," devotes considerable space to works connected with mathematics. Geometry is the artists' foremost source of inspiration; one highlight is Vera Molnar's 2001 painting Carré dévoyé. The Gaussian curve also takes center stage in two explorations of randomness, where countless lines recall Raymond Queneau's Cent mille milliards de poèmes. Numbers feature too, in a work by the late François Morellet, who was fascinated by π.
