Jacques Dominioni (**jacquesdominioni.com**) was a French artist whose work encompassed figurative art, lyrical abstraction and geometric abstraction. His artistic career can be divided into several periods (see box). His "Geometric Art" period comprised several phases, to which he gave evocative names; "Circles and Dynamics," "Cosmic," "Orphism" and "Geometric Fraction" are of particular interest to mathematicians. These names allude to major movements in contemporary art (for example, the "Orphism" phase pays tribute to Sonia and Robert Delaunay; see below).
His highly colorful universe highlights the geometric structure underlying many of his canvases. Even when he returned to figurative art, geometry remained a prominent feature of his compositions. During the period he called "Geometric Lyricism," he could not resist combining lyrical and geometric abstraction. This can be seen in his 2006 self-portrait, where a grid of lines labeled with letters or numbers covers the canvas.
