Who would have wagered in 1987, when a handful of enthusiasts had the outlandish idea of creating a professionally produced magazine devoted to the place of mathematics in the world, that Tangente would still be going thirty years later—and would become the leading reference for mathematical culture?

Tangente reaches a great many teachers and is also available in secondary-school libraries across France and the French-speaking world. Alongside its initiatives aimed directly at teaching, its support for more diverse approaches to learning has proved extremely valuable. Experts attest to this.

Christian Boyer, Vincent Thill, Jean Moreau de Saint-Martin and Philippe Fondanaiche—all passionate amateur mathematicians—agreed to answer our questions about how their interest in mathematics began and the activities they have developed in their favorite areas.

At the end of last June, the Société mathématique de France (SMF) elected mathematician Fabien Durand as its new president. He enthusiastically agreed to speak with the editorial team at Tangente.
