Since September 2019, Frédéric Bertrand has been a professor at the Université de Technologie de Troyes, specializing in modeling and statistical decision-making. Previously an associate professor at the Institut de recherche en mathématique avancée at the Université de Strasbourg, he is actively involved in research while forging close ties with businesses.

Tangente: Could you tell us about your career?**

Frédéric Bertrand: After earning a scientific baccalauréat at Lycée Kléber in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), I chose to continue my education in the classes préparatoires (post-secondary preparatory classes) at the same school. This program teaches students to work more effectively and rigorously while deepening the scientific knowledge acquired in high school—in my case, chiefly in mathematics and physics. After three years of classes préparatoires, I gained admission to ENS Lyon through the mathematics track. Alongside this, I have always been interested in computer science, particularly programming.

Why programming?

Because good programming requires ingenuity and curiosity. Programming, like mathematics, has always been a form of entertainment for me: a series of challenges, a kind of game! I started using the LOGO language on my computer when I was ten and found it captivating.
