The beauty of mathematical problems often lies in an imaginative method—a "haha," as Martin Gardner called it—that makes the solution seem obvious, provided we can find a fresh perspective.

The final installment in our three-part series on methods for solving problems with a minimum of technical machinery. The aim is to discover an imaginative, original approach that shifts the puzzle into familiar territory.

To mark the publication of issue 200, Tangente organized a problem-writing competition. Nine of the forty-three puzzles submitted received prizes, but many others deserved one too. We asked the jury members to single out their personal favorites.

What's presented here isn't a game of five families, but a family of five games (siblings and cousins!) — blocking games, in which a player leaves the game once they can no longer play. All of them concern geometry. In particular, the pieces in these games take many forms, made up of squares, triangles, line segments and cubes.
