Joseph Liouville ----------------
After studying at the École polytechnique and the École des Ponts et Chaussées, Joseph Liouville (1809–1882) taught at the former. He joined the Bureau des longitudes in 1840 and was appointed to a chair at the Collège de France in 1851, before ending his career at the Sorbonne. Liouville's research covered the study of functions, differential equations, geometry and number theory.
Alongside his research, Liouville played a fundamental role in mathematical publishing. In 1836, he founded the Journal de mathématiques pures et appliquées, often called the Journal de Liouville, in which he published results both under his own name and under the pseudonym Besgue. It was in this journal that he published the first papers presenting Galois's work, after filling in some missing links. It was also there that, in 1851, he published his detailed account of the existence of transcendental numbers, expanding on the two presentations he had made before the Académie des sciences in 1844.
