This was a richly deserved tribute to an outward-looking mathematician and a tireless campaigner, wholly devoted to making mathematics accessible to everyone. It was also an opportunity to recall the landmark initiatives that marked the career of this former senior lecturer at Université Paris VII.
Deeply involved in the debate on mathematics education and in initiatives to promote mathematical culture in schools, he directed the IREM de Paris, led the "Informatique pour tous" project in the 1980s and was actively involved in the Association des professeurs de mathématiques de l’enseignement public (APMEP). Everyone spoke of his gifts as a lecturer, his vast and eclectic body of writing and, of course, the now-international Kangourou competition: 110 countries and millions of young people tackling the same problems at the same time!
