This year’s prize goes to Karine Chemla (CNRS, Université de Paris), whose areas of expertise include ancient Chinese mathematics and geometry in France during the first half of the 19th century. Already the recipient of numerous honors, she belongs to the SPHERE (Sciences-Philosophie-Histoire) research group and has many major publications to her name, including Cultures whithout culturalism: The making of Scientific Knowledge and, co-edited with Guo Shuchun, les Neuf Chapitres, le classique mathématique de la Chine ancienne et ses commentaires. She will give her prize lecture in June 2021 in Portoroz, Slovenia.
Throughout her research, this passionate historian of mathematics has highlighted the relationship between mathematics and the culture of the country from which it arose.
