Spiral Jetty is a structure measuring 457 × 4.5 m2. "As we walk along the spiral," he said, "we become an eye adrift in an antediluvian ocean." He died in 1973 while flying over "his" spiral, but the work, now in a protected area, survives. Submerged when the lake level rises and visible during droughts, this unusual mathematical object seems to carry its purely geometric rigor into the middle of nowhere. In tribute to this imposing work, another stone spiral was recently laid out in southern Tunisia by architect and urban planner Amara Ghrab at Chott El Jerid near Tozeur, and Spiral Jetty even has a pixelated version… in Minecraft.
