Confusing "tangent" and "asymptote" is a very common mistake: what student has never made it? Yet the distinction between the two notions is perfectly clear. An exploration of certain constructions in projective geometry will nonetheless force us to call our certainties into question.

The parabola and the catenary are two grand dames of geometry, both with the same open U-shape. The first was studied by the Greeks 2,500 years ago; the second, "only" 330 years ago, by 17th-century mathematicians.

Algebraic curves come in every degree and every variety. They can be represented in the real plane, the complex plane or even the projective plane. How can we find our way around? Learn to recognize them and navigate this rich geometric universe!

Attention, la première image est fausse si le but est de montrer une parabole vue d'avion ! La projection est une ellipse qui a la même courbure en haut et en bas, alors que le tracé a une forme d'oeuf (courbure plus forte en haut qu'en bas).
