Mathematics as a specialization in the general 11th-grade track has generated much debate in recent weeks. At the beginning of the September term, mathematics was held up as the "flagship" specialization (chosen by 67% of students), while some observers appeared to lament the conservatism implied by this supposed "supremacy" (currently, 85% of students in the final year of the general track study mathematics). In the coming months, tenth-grade students must decide how they want to continue their high-school education: the technological or general track? Which stream? Which specializations? Above all, what criteria should guide their choices?
