People who apply artificial intelligence to financial problems work in fintech (fin for "financial," tech for "technologies"). More generally, whenever artificial intelligence is applied to a particular field, it is given a similar label. This creates categories into which startups sort themselves: cleantech for the responsible use of natural resources, insurtech for insurance, edtech for education, adtech for advertising, martech for marketing, foodtech for food, healthtech for health, agritech for agriculture, legaltech for the legal sector… Within each category, specialized technologies are developed, business models are put into practice, companies are launched, and funding streams—especially venture capital—become specialized.
Which of these categories are the most active? One way to measure this is by counting the companies that identify with each category (in four key countries: France, the United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands).
