A scholar, mathematician, and astronomer, Francesco Maurolico is remembered for his research in geometry, optics, conic sections, mechanics, and music. He translated works by Euclid, Apollonius of Perga, and Archimedes from Greek. In 1572, he observed the "new star" phenomenon in the constellation Cassiopeia, a stellar implosion that has since become known as the "supernova of 1572."

Two books on numbers

Among his mathematical writings (in Latin), the Opuscula mathematica stand out. Published in 1575, shortly after his death, they included as a supplement the Arithmeticorum libri duo, written as early as 1557. Their full title conveys the author's ambition: "Two books of arithmetic, published for the first time. With all noteworthy matters. A most copious list."
