It all began with the geometric vision of a Scottish chemist, Alexander Crum Brown (1838–1922). He is best known for inventing the modern representation of organic compounds, in which atoms are shown as spheres linked by line segments representing chemical bonds. He also discovered the double bond in the ethylene molecule.

But he was also the first to explore… knitting geometric shapes. At a very young age, he built a loom and became interested in knots and elaborate knitting systems. Disabled late in life, he returned to his passion for knitting, which allowed him to visualize knots and surfaces in three dimensions.
