Joseph "Joe" Wenninger was the second of seven sons born to an American family of German immigrants. Born on October 31, 1919, in Park Falls, Wisconsin, he turned to the priesthood at a very young age. He studied philosophy and theology at Saint John's University in Minnesota, on a course that included virtually no mathematics.
