This new standard is designed to offer two resolutions, 4K and 8K, corresponding respectively to screens with 3,840 × 2,160 and 7,680 × 4,320 pixels.
This new technology will provide a wider color gamut. Luminance and chrominance signals will increase from 10 to 12 bits per sample, thus covering integer values from 0 to 4,095. With 10 bits, black was defined as 64 and pure white as 940; moving to 12 bits quadruples the precision of the data, with black assigned the value 256 and white the value 3,760. The color gamut is expanded in the same way. As for visualizing the size of the corresponding screens, the illustration does just that.
