Technology and mathematics can serve artistic expression. Digital art proves it. Taking many forms, it is sometimes simply a tool for the artist, while at other times it surprises us with the uncharted territories it explores. Since it lies at the intersection of art and technology, we must distinguish between merely illustrating a mathematical concept and creating a work of art.
The computer program behind a work can sometimes be considered part of the work it generates. In generative art, the digital artist cedes some creative control to the program they have created. Born in Paris in 1938, digital artist and critic Pierre Berger shows us, through his "artificial intelligence" Roxame, how a machine can be programmed to create a pictorial work without seeking to reproduce known works. The entire debate concerns the difference between a human work and one created by a robot: the stakes are enormous in every respect!
