Edward Routh was a British mathematician best known for his research on the stability of systems of differential equations. In algebra, the Routh–Hurwitz criterion can be used to show that the roots of a characteristic polynomial are real and positive without calculating them.
Routh's theorem was introduced in 1879 in a collection for Cambridge students.
