Although Greek geometers, including Euclid, made extensive use of dissections, particularly in proofs, the first work to study the subject systematically was written by the Persian mathematician Abu al-Wafa, who lived in Baghdad in the 10th century. In a work entitled Book on the Geometric Constructions Necessary for the Artisan (Kitab al-Handasa), he systematically addresses dissection problems.
