A sangaku was originally a Japanese wooden votive tablet. It sometimes bears an engraved geometric figure with the statement of a problem, together with the solution or sometimes a hint.

The sphere came to be seen as a model of the world because of its perfection. Greek mathematicians soon sought to measure its properties, laying the groundwork for calculation techniques that would not bear fruit until centuries later.

How should points be placed in a region of the plane to maximize the smallest area determined by any three of them? Despite the elementary nature of this geometry problem, no general solution is known even today!

We can play with areas to calculate π, but we can also start with π and choose areas accordingly. For a change from Archimedes' famous method of exhaustion, we can revive a historical approach probably devised by the Egyptians... Can you do better?
