Aramis and Athos have been sent on a mission. After knocking back a few drinks in a tavern, they want to decide which of them will foot the bill. To settle the matter, they decide to play Grundy's game. They each place three écus on the table and stack all six into a single pile. They then take turns splitting one pile of coins into two unequal piles. They can continue until only piles of one or two écus remain. The player unable to move loses. Aramis goes first.
After four turns, Aramis can no longer move.
He has lost! He must pay the bill.
