Learning maths through Go at school

With adapted rules and smaller boards, Go provides a way to learn mathematics that can be introduced as early as preschool.

In Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), teachers and researchers formed an IREM group to develop activities for teaching mathematics through Go (visit **maths-et-go.fr**).

In preschool and the early years of primary school, handling Go stones helps children discover numbers, make sense of operations and learn basic arithmetic rules. Later, exercises in counting, geometry and algorithms can be devised from game situations. This playful approach engages pupils while helping them develop further problem-solving and reasoning skills.

Three sample exercises:

count all the chains of four stones (left), place a white stone to complete the symmetry (center), Black to play and capture a white chain in two moves (right).
