In 1997, during a brainstorming session, various team members proposed the names coined by Edward Kasner: googolplex, followed by googol. Googol was chosen. The name perfectly captured the engine's ability to index vast quantities of information. Sean Anderson attended the meeting. Sitting at his computer, he immediately checked whether the domain name was available. That was when he made a historic mistake: he typed google.com instead of googol.com! The former was available; the latter was not. Google.com was registered on September 15, 1997. The comic-strip character Barney Google was back! Googleplex became the name of Google's headquarters, located in California near San José. It is one of the company's 23 North American sites. At Googleplex, the company develops its Android operating system for mobile devices.
