An active research group -----------------------------
“Philosophy and Research on Science and Technology” is the full name of the Henri Poincaré Archives (AHP), a joint CNRS/University of Lorraine/University of Strasbourg research unit (UMR 7 117).
The transdisciplinary team inspired by Henri Poincaré’s name and work seeks to bring together, within a single project, scientists interested in the history and epistemology of their discipline, along with philosophers, sociologists, and historians willing to engage with scientific material while illuminating scientific work through the lenses of history and philosophy. This cross-disciplinary symbiosis also makes it possible to look beyond Henri Poincaré’s work and organize the AHP’s overall programme for 2018–2022 around three strands: Digital Humanities and Archives, Science and Reflexivity, and Philosophy, while hosting seminars and conferences such as the one planned in Nancy in July 2022.

The henripoincare.fr website is the result of an enormous undertaking to archive, transcribe, and digitize more than two thousand letters from Henri Poincaré’s correspondence. Written by him or addressed to him, they constitute a genuine gold mine for historians of science seeking to trace the scientist’s intellectual and personal life. The site contains both private correspondence and scientific discussions that Poincaré had with eminent contemporary mathematicians—such as Gösta Mittag-Leffler and Vito Volterra—as well as exchanges with physicists, chemists, astronomers…
Moreover, for each letter the site provides a set of metadata (document type, date, sender, address, place, rights…) as well as comments and references that contextualize the subject matter and put the content of the letter into perspective. Thanks to several indexes and two integrated search engines, it is easy to navigate the site’s contents, whether to find a particular letter or to examine how a given theme is treated in the mathematician’s correspondence.
Lastly, the site reproduces, in whole or in part, the content of several history-of-science publications devoted to Poincaré’s correspondence. A remarkable historical database, accessible to all!

An ambitious project: the “Henri Poincaré Papers” -----------------------------------------------
Another tribute to the celebrated French mathematician is the Henri Poincaré Papers website (**henripoincarepapers.univ-lorraine.fr**), which brings together letters, manuscripts, publications, and resources related to Henri Poincaré’s work. After being restructured (see above), the “correspondence” section “migrated” to the henripoincare.fr website.
On the original site, the bibliography brings together more than six hundred articles, books, and scientific reports written by Poincaré himself, which can be searched using a dedicated search engine. It includes, in particular, the archives of the French Academy of Sciences, featuring famous names such as Camille Jordan, Joseph Bertrand, and Charles Hermite, as well as those of the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences, where Aleksandr Liapounov appears. It also includes the major lectures, the most recent of which took place on 16 June 2021 on the theme “The Computers and Calculators of the Bureau des longitudes.” There, Guy Boistel introduced these unsung men and women who have performed such calculations since 1802. Information that would not have reached the general public without the “Henri Poincaré Papers” project.
