It is impossible to sum up the scientific and educational work of a man such as our colleague and friend Hervé Lehning. More than a thousand articles bear his name! One way to gain a sense of the man is through his vast body of writing.

The merging of two images, one scientific and the other political, gave rise to the image of Évariste Galois as an ill-fated mathematician—the image we have of him today. Galois did not become "famous" until the very last years of the 19th century.

Tireless in his work, Hervé Lehning devoted his life to sharing the mathematics he loved so deeply and making it accessible without sacrificing quality, driven above all by a desire to pass on his passion. But he was much more besides.
